Phlebotomy is the practice of making venous incisions in the tissues of living subjects in order to collect blood samples for medical tests, therefore the practice requires a number of medical and interpersonal skills. The practitioner wishing to qualify as a Phlebotomy Technician must have spent at least one full year as a part-time phlebotomist, or six months as a full-time phlebotomist. They can prove this by providing a letter from a health care professional or supervisor with whom they have worked, stating that procuring blood specimens is a regular part of the applicant’s job. All membership and exam application fees must be paid four weeks in advance of the exam. The applicant then receives a study outline to help him or her prepare for the exam. Both study outline and exam are updated each year to reflect changes and progress in the practice of medicine. The qualified practitioner must continue his or her education, six hours of study each year, in order to maintain the certification.

There are a number of tests available online to help the phlebotomy applicant prepare for his or her exam. The Phlebotomy National practice test consists of one hundred and sixty-seven questions. On analysis, there are questions on a variety of topics. They include questions on laboratory practice, with quite a number involved in identifying the correct, color-coded tubes with which to draw the patient’s blood. There are questions on general medical and laboratory practice, on legal matters, and on interpersonal skills.
